Planning cloud hosting and migration in South Africa

A cloud migration is a business-continuity project as well as a technical change. MBICT provides cloud hosting, migration and support services. Before choosing infrastructure, document what must remain available, how much data is involved and how users will be affected during the move.

Build a migration and rollback plan

List websites, applications, email services, databases and integrations, including who controls each account. Agree a migration window, a backup approach and checks for the destination system. A rollback plan defines when to return to the previous environment if testing reveals a problem. Do not assume that every migration can avoid downtime.

Compare support, recovery and recurring costs

Ask for the proposed hosting resources, backup retention, restore process and support responsibilities in writing. Availability targets, monitoring coverage and recovery objectives belong in the agreed service scope. Infrastructure, licences, storage and data transfer can have separate costs; compare the ongoing total rather than the headline hosting price.

What to include in your project brief

  • Applications, dependencies and current hosting accounts
  • Data volume and acceptable maintenance window
  • Backup, recovery and access-control requirements
  • Monthly budget and responsibility for ongoing updates

Cloud Hosting & Migration: common questions

What should a cloud migration plan include?

Include an inventory, dependencies, backups, access permissions, migration steps, acceptance tests and a rollback decision. Agree the maintenance window and communication plan before moving production services.

Are backups the same as disaster recovery?

No. Backups preserve copies of data. A recovery plan also defines how to restore the application, reconnect dependencies and resume operations. Test restoration rather than assuming that a backup can be recovered.

Does every cloud package include the same uptime or support?

No. Confirm availability targets, backup frequency, retention, monitoring coverage, response arrangements and exclusions in the quotation or service agreement. Do not assume a universal SLA.
